Comprehensive Infection Control

Instrument sterilization is very important and necessary. All instruments used in a patient's mouth go through a rigorous cleaning process. After each patient's procedure is done, the operatory is broken down. Anything that was touched during the procedure is disinfected, and new barriers or covers are placed.

The soiled instruments are brought into the sterilization room where they are soaked in a detergent solution. Then, they are placed in an ultrasonic cleaning unit to remove any remaining debris. After the ultrasonic cleaning is done, the instruments are thoroughly rinsed in hot water, dried, and placed in pouches and sealed. The sealed pouches are then placed in the sterilizer, which runs a full cycle of 20 minutes at 273 degrees Fahrenheit. There are heat-activated indicators on the pouches, which tell us that the sterilization has occurred. After the pouches of sterilized instruments cool, the instruments are returned to the operatories for the next use. We are very particular about our instrument sterilization because our patients are very important to us.
